Fragmenta

To thank you would profane you —
There are moments when Gratitude is a desecration —

—Emily Dickinson a Abigail Cooper

I decided. Decided. It isn't pain, but numbness that will bury me. It is not how my body—"aw, this old thing?"—has failed, nor the pain. It hurts to write but I insist on using a pen. My legs don't work anymore and my face doesn't resemble what I think should be my face. So I decided. Decided. I trust you will receive my diaries and know what to do with them. I hoped to see you again before this and am sad that we could not make it happen, but please feel no remorse for my decision. I entrust you with my words and thoughts as a way of thanking you for your presence these past years. I hope you will lead a bountiful life. Count on my eternal gratitude—may it not desecrate you.

Love,
L

James Joyce — Ulysses, 18:

"yes I think he made them a bit firmer sucking them like that so long he made me thirsty titties he calls them I had to laugh yes this one anyhow stiff the nipple gets for the least thing Ill get him to keep that up and Ill take those eggs beaten up with marsala"

They removed my right breast because tumors made them "unviable". That is what they called them. Unviable. Viable for what I do not know. I beg for touch, but my skin has become too sensitive and I find touch unbearable. I feel lonely because I am alone in this entire body. I beg for touch, not relief. Being touched, felt, held. I beg beg beg. They feed me pills and I sleep most days. The other day my sister took my hand and I felt her trembling. Her trembling hurt me, not metaphorically: my skin hurt from her but I held tight to her because all I could feel was her hand.

I wonder if you still feel sad. You were sad when I met you. I am dying and sad. I wonder if your hand would hurt me. I know it would but wish it would not, because holding is the only thing we can do now. Hold. I will hold.

Rituales

In memoriam JWT

Intervention. A psychodrama in five acts

I. Ash Wednesday

For I do not know, I do not know. I do not need more noise, but I crave it. How do I crave it. How those tendrils cling to my neck, I bend my back towards the ground because I cannot bear the weight. I. I. I. I wear that cross again, not metaphorically. Spirit is a parasite, but I wear it on my forehead—metaphor for clarity. I was once in purgatory and I felt its tendrils, its pain. I felt spirit dragging me towards its center—metaphor for depression. I grew tired of being a metaphor, so I found spirit bursting through the seams of my sadness. It was always there and never left. Sadness, that is.

II. The thoughts of death have vanished and the sky is still the sky

but not the same sky. I do not feel the same sadness, but I hear you knocking on my door. Invoking phantoms is a nasty habit and I need to be rid of it. Hell, I have read somewhere, is full of noise. I know, I know. See, I busted open my heart and tar spilled everywhere and it covered the entire world. Its fallout covered the planet for ages and almost everything died. Things that were not even alive died. See, all of my poems have to do with that blackened sky; its taste, the sound of death, its weightless movement.

III. My wife told me I should not spend so much time in front of a screen

The spirit that fell like thunder said I will not serve you. It was a spirit, a wraith; the most beautiful being there ever was. My wife is miraculous: thunder upon thunder, a force of nature. Her hands could shatter mountains. Hurricane. I tried. I tried my best. Me and my wife, forever. Hey, I do regret that time when we went to get dinner. She went to get sodas and I got the hamburgers. When we sat down, she said I brought you the usual. The usual. How tied are our destinies.

IV. What the thunder said

Cue T. S. Elliot. Colors are important. Your color is the lack of color or every color at once. Depends on how you see it. My whole existence is a love letter for you. My undying love. My destiny. You said love was an evil force and I agreed. Not sure why.

Allie Brosh: “I’m still depressed, but how depressed I am varies, which is good. Much of the time, it’s a comfortable numbness that just makes things feel muted. Other times, I’m standing in the shower or something and I can feel the nothingness hurtling toward me at eight thousand miles per hour and there’s nothing I can really do aside from let it happen and wait until it goes away again.”

JWT: "I have no one to tell my sadness. Even if we could meet again you wouldn’t know me, with my dusty face, my temples coated with frost. At night in a dark dream I suddenly found myself home. By the small window you were combing your hair. We looked at each other without words, just a thousand lines of tears. I know you’ll wait for me each year in that heartbreak place, through nights of brightmoon, under the dwarfpine by your mound."

Anne Carson: "My brother once showed me a piece of quartz that contained, he said, some trapped water older than all the seas in our world. He held it up to my ear. 'Listen,' he said, 'life and no escape.'"

Fragments

even if we are separated so I do not know
your name or voice
(if I seem so foreign as to be forgotten)
go to the airport inside your heart and I will do the same,
and meet you there,
amid the stream of difference.

Jacqueline Winter Thomas

1A12:

You mentioned once how you †liked† Emily Dickinson, so I started using hyphens as stops in my poems.

1A14:

you are structurally unable to love—
deliverance is impossible.

2B23:

We resemble parallel lines, not meant to touch each other anymore.

4A12:

You are a waste of space. Please burn all my letters.

5A1:

You turned this sad girl into light and I will love you forever.

5A20:

Please disappear.

5A30:

I have loved you for too long. It is sad not having you in my life anymore.

6A1:

I am here. I will not leave.

6A2:

You make my texts much better, yet make me sound so angry.

6A3:

yes yes yes yes you won't hear no from me

7A4:

I am tired of gulping down the chaos that leaks from your pores.

7A5:

Thunderstorms remind me of you. I cannot decide if that is a good thing or not.

7A8:

Your words exude colors, and I would paint my blood with all of them.

8B1:

The best of all my rituals. Even if we are not together anymore, I will carry your name inside me. I will hold your image within my heart. I am forever molded by what you mean to me.

A: Ipsissima verba, literal quote.
B: Testimonia, reconstruction.

Naturkraft (edición)

"When I wrote that poem for you, expected to defang your cruel nature, wanted you to find me. I tied seven lilies to my hair like the girl that placed flowers under her pillow. Wanted to recognize the forces that drove you, but if I saw you in hell you would not recognize me.

"I wrote your name seven times in every minute that slipped by my hair. Seven times I tasted the forces that drove you away: her voice, my nails. Seven times I slept under the stars: Capricorn. Sacred goat, I thought your name as a force; your words as flowers again. Your girl, sacred ghost without a name; stones under the forces that create your fields.

"I tamed the forces that drove you away: her voice, that tiny stone; life and no escape. Imagine eternity trapped within a stone: you will find me. Wild forces: her hair floating under Capricorn. You would not know my name if you found me in hell—as you will. But I would find you anywhere. I can taste the forces that drove you: her hand, my nails. You are home; I am a force.

"You loved the girl who placed those flowers under her pillow; but I crafted those words before her. Her, you will not find her trapped in eternity because I am eternity. I would ruin all eternities to muster those words. She will not find the place within you where I buried all of eternity—neither will I.

"When you wrote those numbers for me, encoded message herein, I knew the forces that drove you. I could not stand in their way because your nature responds to forces which are not me. Your numbers translated into lines translated into parallels. We shall never love each other again. If I shall not love again, there will be no field, no respite, no relief from the shadow of your flowers. I have loved none more than you.

"I will collect the flowers and be-multiplied in words, in fields, in forces. I will become the girl who loved you. I will become frost. I will become the eternity I buried inside you. We shall not be together again under those forces because time burns eternities. I will light a candle for you at St. Anne's, but you will not know. Your loss."

—L. Sott
